How to view RAW files in Windows 7 photo viewer?
Oct 23, 2016
Howdy,
I recently bought a Nikon D750. Had been using a D90 for 5 years before that and had faced the same issue before when I initially started shooting RAW.
I remember downloading and installing some kind of windows codec for RAW support and it worked but information technology's not working for the D750 RAW files.
I googled and found this -
http://world wide web.digitalcitizen.life/how-view-raw-pictures-windows-live-photograph-gallery-and-gear up-weird-errors
Which ultimately leads to this -
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=26829
Only, I checked the supported models and the D750 isn't listed. I kinda accept a feeling that it will work for the D750 as well because the D800 and D800E are listed, but I'm not sure.
I'd like a definitive solution, delight.
Kindly help.
P.S. - For some weird reason, RAW files are able to generate the thumbnails only give mistake on double-click. ("Windows photo viewer tin can't display this file....")
Earlier (with D90), information technology was the exact reverse. No thumbnails but was able to view on double-click.

Give this a shot: http://downloadcenter.nikonimglib.com/en/download/sw/28.html
If that doesn't work for you lot, you might have to resort to using something other than Windows Photograph Viewer. FastStone works pretty well.

That link is for v.1.26.0. The NEF Codec is now at five.1.29.0, and available here:

Re: How to view RAW files in Windows vii photograph viewer?
After struggling with a like problem - and I need RAW support for a number of different cameras - I found this referenced on the Imatch site:
FastPictureViewer Codec Pack
Which sorts everything out (caveat - I don't have whatever Nikon files). The $10 seemed well worth while in commutation for having to chase down codecs for each camera.

I'k not 100% sure information technology will support your particular photographic camera, but they actually attempt to get all of them:

I've been using it for years. It costs a few bucks and works seamlessly.

Re: How to view RAW files in Windows 7 photograph viewer?
Thanks anybody!
I wouldn't desire to pay for something as bones as this. As it is photography is an expensive 'hobby' or profession. I really can't beget to pay for a RAW codec and even if I could, I would rather not, to be honest.
I did endeavour the windows codec first merely unfortunately it didn't piece of work.
The Nikon NEF codec (v ane.29.0) seems to be working.
Again, thanks everyone for the inputs.

Personally, I prefer NEF files to exist handled past Nikon'southward ain software than by 3rd political party.

I would prefer anything (in this case, Nikon's Codec) that doesn't force me to use an actress software.
Another piece of software is the last thing that my workflow needs.

Re: How to view RAW files in Windows 7 photo viewer?
Just for info, the FastPicture Viewer is no more or less a slice of software than the Nikon codec - it's only a consummate set up of codecs.
Admittedly, I wasn't keen on paying either, only given that I accept RAW files from at to the lowest degree 10 different cameras on my PC, saving the hassle saved tracking downward and installing ten different codecs was well worth the $10.

Oh, I was mistaken. Sounds like a great idea and then.

Well, so spending money on it is completely justified. For me, non so much because I will exist working with simply D90 and D750 RAW files for at least a couple of years.
I understand your position though. If I was working with a similar situation like y'all, I wouldn't mind paying fifty-fifty $fifteen. Convenience and quality trump money virtually of the times, IMO. (As long as a production isn't grossly overpriced)
I think every bit you get older you begin to realise time is more valuable than money
I have realized this already, but unfortunately, immature guns similar me don't always have access to easy money and take to advisedly invest but as necessary.

Microsoft ships a set of WIC codecs with Windows 8 and later. These codecs back up near (!) of the mutual RAW formats and hence make this normally seamless. Since you run Windows 7, you volition accept to install a separate codec. Nikon offers them for costless , then there is no problem.
The general thought of WIC codecs is that Windows provides a framework to 'deal' with RAW files in a standardized way from an application perspective (in your case, Windows Explorer).
The device vendor (Nikon) is supposed to provide a WIC codec that integrates into Windows and makes their proprietary RAW formats accessible via the common WIC interfaces.
Nikon now has 20 or more proprietary file format variants in use - all with the .NEF extension. And Nikon should know almost all of them and be able to provide a WIC codec that produces the all-time possible rendition of the raw information, using Nikon'due south ain algorithms.
This does non give you as much command equally a dedicated RAW converter similar Lr or Silkypix or any, but at least your files are viewable in all applications that support the WIC standard.
And the FastPictureViewer codecs are really worth their money.
Especially if you bargain with photos taken with many different camera models. Or if the original WIC codec from the camera vendor does non support all of their formats (which sadly happens, especially for older camera models).

I do not sympathize the technicalities involved in this but why is there a need to have 20 dissimilar types of .NEF?
Is information technology considering of the evolving technology? (Similar for example, the RAW files produced by D750 are intrinsically different/much better than say, that of a Nikon D90?)
If that is indeed the case, shouldn't at least the files produced by cameras of the aforementioned generation exist same? (For example - D750, D500 etc?)
And the FastPictureViewer codecs are really worth their money. Particularly if y'all deal with photos taken with many different camera models. Or if the original WIC codec from the camera vendor does not support all of their formats (which sadly happens, especially for older camera models).
Yes, I conceded that. In such a scenario, I wouldn't mind paying for it.
BTW, what is a 'WIC' codec?

Re: How to view RAW files in Windows 7 photograph viewer?
Cameras evolve and then do the RAW formats. Sometimes RAW formats fifty-fifty differ afterwards you install a new firmware...
From my perspective as a DAM vendor, this creates potential problems in the long term. Many libraries and companies have policies which exclude proprietary formats like RAW, DNG or PSD from beingness used for long-term archival. If you remember 20 or 50 years into the future, using a proprietary and undocumented RAW format for image storage is a no-become...
A 'WIC codec' is a piece of software provided by a photographic camera or device vendor. The codec understands the file format and makes it accessible in standardized means for Windows and applications which support WIC. Quite similar to a printer driver.
