Klaatu () was a Canadian rock grouping[6] formed in 1973 by the duo of John Woloschuk and Dee Long. They named themselves after the ambassador from an extraterrestrial confederation who visits Globe in the film The Day the World Stood Still. Later recording two not-charting singles, drummer Terry Draper was added to the line-up; this trio constituted Klaatu throughout the rest of the band's recording career.
In Canada, the band is remembered for several hits, including "California Jam" (1974), "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft" (1976) and "Knee Deep in Dearest" (1980). In the U.Due south. "Calling Occupants" backed with "Sub-Rosa Subway" was a small double-sided hit and their just nautical chart entry, peaking at No. 62 in 1977.
Internationally, the group'south pop-influenced blend of rock styles has led to them being known equally the "Canadian Beatles".[three] [7]
Musical style [edit]
Klaatu's combination of pop and progressive rock has often been compared to the Beatles, and sometimes to the guitar-stone of Queen, and the electronic music of Wendy Carlos.[iii] British music magazine Shindig! praised the ring's "otherworldly brand of progressive pop".[five] Publications such as Pitchfork have described the group as the "Canadian Beatles".[vii]
Their showtime and most successful album 3:47 EST showcased progressive stone and psychedelic pop,[1] while subsequent albums such as Sir Ground forces Accommodate featured a pop rock sound.[3]
Early releases [edit]
The ring, initially a studio-only duo of Woloschuk and Long, released the singles "Anus of Uranus/Sub-Rosa Subway" and "Dr. Marvello/For You Girl" on GRT Records, in 1973, before being taken under the wing of Daffodil Records and its president Frank Davies. With Terry Draper added to the line-up, the singles "California Jam" and "Truthful Life Hero" followed. These early singles credited Dee Long as a writer of several tunes; the others (including "Sub-Rosa Subway", "Dr. Marvello" and the hitting single "California Jam") were credited to "Chip Dale," a commonage pseudonym for Woloschuk and frequent co-author Dino Tome. "California Jam" hit the Canadian Pinnacle 40, peaking at No. 36, and Klaatu, though they played no live dates, promoted their music by making a television appearance in Canada on the Keith Hampshire-hosted show Music Machine. Past 1975, Davies, along with producer Terry Brown, landed the band a deal with Capitol Records in the United States.
First three albums and controversy [edit]
Their first album, iii:47 EST (named Klaatu in the US every bit Capitol Records' executives constitute the original title too obscure), was released in September 1976, in N America. The band elected to include no photos, no individual musician credits, and no biographical data in the anthology package; all songs were just listed as being written and published past "Klaatu." (Note that this commonage writing credit covered songs before credited solely to Long or to the squad of Woloschuk and Tome – fifty-fifty though Tome was not actually a member of Klaatu.) The album was met with moderately positive reviews only past Christmas of that year, sales had stalled.
Just and so, in 1977 an commodity published in the Providence Journal written by journalist Steve Smith, speculated that iii:47 EST could actually be a release past a secretly reunited Beatles recording under a pseudonym, leading to widespread rumours. These rumours were fueled by a number of factors, including the fact that their album was released by Capitol Records (too the Beatles' label), the lack of artist and producer credits or photographs in the album packaging, Klaatu's avoidance of public performances, and the fact that the group's vocal and musical way was reminiscent of the Beatles.[8] In improver, Ringo Starr's 1974 album Goodnight Vienna had featured encompass art with Starr appearing in identify of the character Klaatu from the movie The Day the Earth Stood Still.[9] The album as a whole had a Beatlesque audio, particularly in the song "Sub-Rosa Subway."[10] The rumor turned into a global phenomenon with Beatles fans being fed "clues" by radio stations and impress media alike. Subsequent to the Beatles rumor, the songs "Sub-Rosa Subway" and "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft" became small-scale hits for Klaatu in 1977. "Calling Occupants" was covered by the Carpenters that aforementioned twelvemonth, condign a Pinnacle 40 hit worldwide.[11] [12]
While all this was happening, Klaatu were in England, recording their second album. They were somewhat aware of the situation with regard to the rumors, but did not take them entirely seriously – possibly because the UK's New Musical Express famously published an commodity on the Beatles-as-Klaatu theory under the title "Deaf Idiot Journalist Starts Beatle Rumour." Meanwhile, Capitol Records (who controlled the Beatles' music in the U.S.) tried to make equally much of the rumors as possible, by issuing ambiguously worded statements that failed to make the band'southward identity entirely clear. The rumor was disproved when Dwight Douglas, program manager at WWDC in Washington, D.C., checked the records at the U.S. Copyright Part and uncovered the ring members' real names.[xiii]
The ring's 2nd album Hope, released in 1977, included orchestral contributions by the London Symphony Orchestra. Sir Army Arrange, their third anthology, is notable for the track "Silly Boys", which contains the entire lyrical portion of their unmarried "Hanus of Uranus" – a song later re-recorded equally "Anus of Uranus" for their first album – backwards-masked interspersed between the "Airheaded Boys" lyrics. For both these releases, the ring connected their policy of non including any individual names of ring members in the credits, nor did they play any alive shows or make any public appearances to promote these albums.
Blithe picture project [edit]
In 1977, Al Invitee and Jean Mathieson of Rainbow Animation were deputed past Capitol Records to create an animated music video of the vocal "A Routine Day".[14] This video ran on Don Kirshner'due south Stone Concert and later on played as a short in Los Angeles on the same bill equally Animal House.
Post-obit that, Invitee and Mathieson got permission from Capitol Records to create a vehicle for Klaatu's songs. They wrote and directed a half-hr television special they titled Happy New Year Planet Earth, hoping that it would get yearly broadcasts as an alternative to Christmas specials. New Year's Eve was Mathieson'due south birthday. Again the group Klaatu was photographed and rotoscoped, with an astronaut wraparound created to connect the six Klaatu songs. Although the project was completed, Guest and Mathieson were dropped by their Canadian film investment grouping and wound upwardly financing it themselves. They never released information technology.[14]
In 2005, the group permitted the film to be screened in its uncompleted state at the KlaatuKon convention in Toronto.[15] The unfinished animations were subsequently released as function of the 2013 Sir Army Adjust bonus disc.[xvi]
Afterwards years [edit]
Upon the release of their fourth studio album, Endangered Species, in 1980, the band for the first fourth dimension included their individual names in the album package, and the songs were at present credited to their private writers. (Subsequent re-issues of before Klaatu material, every bit well every bit newly published Klaatu sheet music, also gave credit to the bodily songwriters of each track, rather than a collective credit.)
Although forced by Capitol to record Endangered Species in Los Angeles using established studio musicians to shore up the group'southward commercial chances, the anthology was a critical and commercial flop. The album's poor showing resulted in Capitol Records dropping the group. Now lacking a tape characterization, Long and Draper temporarily formed a classic stone cover band with Freddy Coutts, John Jones, and John Bojicic, called FUNN, who played extensively around Toronto.
Klaatu was eventually signed by Capitol's Canadian division, EMI Canada, and released their terminal album, Magentalane, in 1981. This anthology saw the group returning to their brand of Beatles-influenced popular/rock. As a contractual obligation to Capitol-EMI in Canada, the ring was forced to play their first-ever alive dates and tour about of Canada to promote Magentalane. From November 1981, the grouping expanded to a sextet, enlisting Gary McCracken (drums), Mike Gingrich (bass) and Gerald O'Brien (keyboards) for alive performances. However, in Apr 1982 Dee Long – never addicted of performing live, by most accounts – quit the group. Although Woloschuk and Draper carried on performing for a few more months - with Terry Watkinson replacing a departing O'Brien and Marty Morin taking McCracken's chair - Klaatu officially disbanded in August of the same year.
Reunions [edit]
The trio very briefly reunited in 1988 at George Martin'southward Air Studios in London with John Jones to tape a single, "Woman", though no one was particularly happy with the results as the song was written by someone exterior of the band (Paul Vincent Gunia) for the German Television receiver series Tatort. Initially Long had wanted to merely use the Klaatu name, only could not get the remainder of the band's blessing without their involvement. The single was released only in West Germany and did not chart, making it an extremely rare item in the Klaatu catalogue; Draper confirmed that the song was considered for a few rarities compilations, simply all iii band members had agreed to not include the rails.
A 2nd reunion had been attempted in 1991 to tie together with a proposed compilation release, only plans fell through after a disagreement with their distributor, BEI.[17]
The 3 onetime members of Klaatu reunited on May 7, 2005, for a brief – and mostly acoustic – operation at Toronto'south KlaatuKon.[18] The gear up list consisted of "At the Cease of the Rainbow," "I Don't Wanna Get Home," "Cherie," "Magentalane," "All Good Things", and "Little Neutrino".[15]
Mail service-Klaatu [edit]
Klaatu'south albums were released on CD format rather belatedly, and up until the 2000s several companies, including Capitol Records, released the albums with incorrect runway orders. Finally, Bullseye Records, with the help of the ring itself, released the albums in their original track listings. Bullseye besides released a tribute anthology to Klaatu, Around the Universe in Lxxx Minutes.
In 2005, Bullseye Records released a 2-CD collection entitled Dominicus Set, which compiled a number of rarities, demos, rare early singles, and other odds and ends recorded during the group's career. Perhaps most interesting was the original version of Hope which had been delivered to Capitol Records, including the complete contributions made past the London Symphony Orchestra, which had largely been removed from the version which was eventually released. The fix too included a 40-page booklet including interviews with all of the sometime members of the band.
Bullseye Records of Canada also released Raarities in 2005; oddly plenty, this collection was originally released only in a vinyl LP format. A CD version, titled Solology, including the Raarities LP likewise as concert recordings, was released in March 2009. Raarities probably appeals more than to the group'southward hardcore fans since virtually of the material on the record consists of alternate mixes and single versions, as opposed to Sunday Ready, which focused on unreleased material and the alternate version of Hope.
On March fifteen, 2011, Klaatu announced the creation of their new tape label, Klaatunes Records. The ring besides created an official website to go along with the new label. The label's premiere was a re-release of 2009's Solology. The band has so far remastered their first three albums iii:47 EST, Hope and Sir Ground forces Adapt.[19]
